The fan housing, all inspection openings and divided housings as well as the shaft throughput of the drive must be correspondingly sealed. The sealing requirements for fans are divided into categories A-H in ISO13349. A 100% tightness is neither necessary nor economical for all applications. With a continuously-welded housing and double FPM lip seal, the corresponding maintenance category H1 can be achieved.
According to the standard for Ex-fans EN 14986, fans having a combustible gas above the LEL (Lower Explosion Level), e.g. biogas / methane, the leak rate can be specified by the manufacturer.
The design 'technically tight' or 'permanently technically tight' according to EN 1127-1 requires, for example, a hermetic encapsulation, the use of mechanical seals or a turbo-labyrinth seal in combination with a monitored barrier gas device.
